Use a wide, flat brush designed for exterior painting that is about four to six inches wide and has synthetic bristles if you are applying water-based paints. You want to use a paintbrush with natural bristles for oil-based paints. Choose a sturdy brush with long bristles to help cover larger areas quickly and reach between slats.

If your fence has rough or textured wood, using a brush with firm bristles will help the paint get into all the nooks and crannies. For large projects, you might also consider using a roller or sprayer to speed things up and using a brush for finishing touches or detailed areas.
It depends! Spraying fence paint is faster and more efficient for covering large areas, especially on fences with intricate designs or textured wood. A paint sprayer provides an even coat and can cover difficult-to-reach areas. Be mindful to mask off areas you don't want to be painted as the overspray may reach plants, surfaces, and other objects.

Brushing allows for more control and precision, especially for detailed work. It may take longer, but brushing can lead to even, thorough application, particularly on rough or absorbent surfaces.
Use a paint sprayer for speed and efficiency if you’re looking to paint your fence. Start by cleaning the fence thoroughly, removing dirt, debris, and any growth that may have settled on your fence. Next, repair any damaged sections and sand rough areas. Protect surrounding plants and surfaces with drop cloths or plastic sheets from overspray.

When using the sprayer, apply the paint in long, smooth strokes, keeping the sprayer moving to avoid drips. After spraying, use a brush to touch up tight corners or missed spots, ensuring an even and thorough finish.
Rolling is a good option for painting a fence if you have a flat, smooth surface (think wood or vinyl without bigger gaps), you’re working on a small section, or your fence is short.

A roller will not offer the best result if you are trying to cover textured surfaces (think rough or weathered), pickets, and fences with intricate designs. Avoid unpainted spots and uneven application by using a paint sprayer or a brush for details and reaching nooks and crannies.
Yes. It's generally best to pressure wash or sand your fence before painting to remove dirt, organic growth, and any peeling paint. A clean and dry surface helps ensure the new paint can adhere properly.

Pressure washing is quicker and more efficient for cleaning large areas compared to sanding. However, if your fence has rough spots, splinters, or stubborn peeling paint, you may need to sand those areas after pressure washing to create a smooth surface for painting.
